My first memories are of Hawaii. I remember going to school and playing little league barefoot, sharing my block with at least 30 other kids, and never having to lock a front door or ring a doorbell, as was the local custom. Certainly times have changed, even in Hawaii, but this is how I remember it. For me, this time is a very important and fortunate reminder. We moved to San Diego from Hawaii when I was 7, and I was raised here in La Jolla. Besides the waves, there were the tide pools and the sea caves to explore; the Cove and the cliffs of Torrey Pines. I felt like the luckiest kid in the world and, since I’m still living here 20 years later, I guess I still am. Surfing has been, and remains, one of the most important factors influencing my life. Surfing is a lot of patience, awareness, concentration, and hard work just for the chance at a few, free, fleeting magical moments. My job as a surf instructor is to pass on these magical moments to others. This is especially rewarding when teaching children, as surfing helps to build the essential foundations needed for a healthier, happier future.
